In memory of Margaret C. Lassey
Margaret moved with her family from Iowa to Brawley when she was one year old and lived the rest of her life there. Norman Lassey moved to Brawley in 1946 and subsequently met Margaret and they were married on July 3, 1948.
Norm and Margaret Lassey were married for 63 years before she passed away in 2011 from the effects of Parkinson’s disease at the age of 90. Margaret became an active volunteer of the Pioneers Memorial Hospital Women’s Auxiliary of Pioneers Memorial Hospital in 1959. Margaret spent many hours in revitalizing the gift shop which is now one of the best gift shops in the Imperial Valley. She also served as president in 1977-78.
During her long and active tenure as a volunteer of PMH Women’s Auxiliary, she always maintained a particular interest in the nursing program.
In 2004 she was presented an award from the Pioneers Memorial Hospital Foundation for her many years of service with the Women’s Auxiliary. This was the first year the award was presented and it was named “The Margaret Award” in her honor. It is now presented annually.
Norman, their daughter Carol Greaves, granddaughters Shelley Ridge, and Christi McClain have established an endowment fund appropriately named the “Margaret C. Lassey Nursing Scholarship Fund” to memorialize Margaret’s devotion to the PMH Women’s Auxiliary. As an endowment, this fund will support the PMH Women’s Auxiliary’s nursing scholarship program in perpetuity.
First Time Applicants
- To be eligible an applicant must be accepted in the nursing program at Imperial Valley College or other medical programs acceptable to the Scholarship Committee.
- Complete Application.
- Include Transcript of Grades (office copy).
- Financial Aid Office can provide this.
- Personal Statement - give related information about yourself, explain why you are pursuing the medical field and your goals.
- Three Letters of Recommendation (no relatives).
- Only GPA of 3.0 or better will be considered.
- First time applicants will be contacted for interview.
This endowment fund is held at and administered by The San Diego Foundation on behalf of the Imperial Valley Community Foundation for benefit of the Women’s Auxiliary of Pioneers Memorial Hospital to provide scholarships for nursing students from Imperial Valley.
The scholarship application and selection process will be handled by the PMH Women’s Auxiliary. This scholarship will be available and funded semiannually.
Scholarships will be issued in the name of the “Margaret C. Lassey Scholarship Fund.”
